Bird Paintings
“The acute concern with image to format goes on in the Bird paintings. I am trying to arrive at an abrupt, daring composition; maybe attempting to surprise the spectator with a sudden presentation of the image. It’s like placing the bird configuration in the most telling way in order to convey the mood, to be as natural say as the bird itself manipulating space and drifting with or across the wind. The relationship of the image of the wing to the shape of the canvas might express a poignant moment of sadness, recall or a sense of loss perhaps. I want these paintings to be bold but hopefully sensitive. I am also striving for an economic statement which is endowed with a degree of poise, elegance and grace and encompassing the essence of my emotions. A balletic serenity is beginning to appear in these new works.”
